Banquet Update

Due to the scheduling of various sports and holiday events that may make it impossible for all the boys to attend we have opted to move the middle school banquet from December to January 2012 after the break. This gives everyone a chance to attend and not be under the holiday hustle and bustle. The final date will be announced here as soon as we know so in the mean time please send in your forms so that we can get an accurate count.

Thank you

AMS Banquet 2011

Parents/Guardians

We need help planning and organizing the middle school banquet for our Championship Team. If you are interested and can help in any way please let us know as it will be greatly appreciated. The banquet will take place in the AMS Commons area (lunchroom) at a date yet to be finalized but close to the winter break in Dec. This will give us time to get everything planned/organized/created/ordered for a fantastic event for our team. We need help with the following:

1. Potluck/Desert/Drinks/etc….. we need to know who is bringing what so we don’t have too many of the same thing.
2. Plates/Napkins/Cups/Plasticware
3. Decorations

Currently we are working on putting together either a highlight video or game compilation on DVD. We will have to charge for those to cover the cost. More info will be available as we get close to the banquet. Just keep an eye on the website for up to date info regarding this. Each player will receive a championship t-shirt and a trophy or memory keepsake.

If you are unable to help with the banquet, donations would be greatly appreciated. Make checks payable to “Alcoa Middle School Football Boosters”. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or need additional information. We need this information back as soon as possible. Yellow forms were sent home with the boys regarding this information to be returned today. We understand that not all parents/guardians received this so please email Coach McClurg mmcclurg@alcoaschools.net by the end of the week, 4th Nov 2011 so we can start getting things in order.

We will need the following:

1. Parents/Guardians Name:
2. Phone #:
3. Email:
4. Players Name:
5. Number of Family Members that will be attending.

Game AMS-MMS CHANGED to 10/18

The Alcoa vs Maryville Game scheduled for Thursday Oct 13th has been CHANGED to Tuesday, OCT 18th due to the wet weather conditions/forecast. The boys are being told to let parents know.

WEEKLY recap for Sep 12th-16th

This week we played Union Grove Middle School. They are a Pistol Spread football team offensively and play a blitzing style of defense. We knew this would be a physical football game because Union Grove is always a physical football team. We wanted to be very fast and physical this week. We won the game 46-14. Captains for this weeks game were Caleb Woody, Myles Brown, Iyron Edwards, and Garrett LeQuire. On the first play from scrimmage after the opening kick-off Caleb Woody intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown to get the scoring started. The AMS offensive line led by Jonathan Decker moved defenders that allowed backs to get the ground game going. We were able to successfully pass the ball to a number of receivers. Florent Ismali, Caleb Woody, Ryan Clark all hauled in Mitchell McClurg passes to help keep Union Grove’s defense off balance. Cameron Canfield, Sam Scott, Garrett Livesay, and Quay McCollum helped open huge holes for running backs Matthew McClurg, Dustin Clabough, Caleb Cooper, Chris Badgett, and Kahlil Abuhania. Who each tore through holes for huge gains and touchdowns.

Our first team defense limited Union Grove to four first downs and zero points. Big hits were made by several AMS defenders. Jonthan Decker, Florent Ismali, Mason McClanahan, Florent Ismali, Peyton Hill, Garrett LeQuire, George Hooker, Jonah Dunnings, Alex Waits, and Davis Maples all made or assisted in big stops for the Tornado defense.

Next week, we play Heritage Middle School at home. Kick-off is set for 7pm. Players need to arrive back at the dressing room around 5:20pm with all necessary game equipment.

Don’t forget, Friday, September 16th is the Alcoa High School football homecoming game against Scott County. Scott County will be using the AMS football dressing room for the game. All equipment and personal items must be removed from the AMS football dressing room by Friday at 3pm. Please make sure that your game pants and jersey are returned to Coach McClurg so that they can be washed for next weeks game.

Thanks,

Coach McClurg

WEEKLY recap for Sept 5th – 9th

The AMS vs North game was very physical on both sides of the ball. North used a very large powerful fullback to try to blow open holes against a very stingy AMS defense. Our offense successfully passed the ball for large gains throughout the game. It was another game that we had the opportunity to play lots of kids. The final score was AMS 38 North 0.

Defensively we stopped North on their first offensive series when several AMS defenders stopped the big full back on a 4th and 2 and from there the AMS defense took over from that point till the final horn. The defense was led by Jonathan Decker, Kahlil Abulanha, Matthew McClurg, Jonah Dunnings, Peyton Hill, and Florent Ismali.

Offensively we were able to successfully run and throw the ball against a big North Middle defense. Our offense passed for two touchdowns and three conversions. We ran the well at times as North attempted to load the box to slow our run game which opened up the passing game. Offensively, Caleb Woody, Dustin Clabough, Ryan Clark, and Jared McDonald caught passes that scored or led to big gains. Mitchell McClurg passed for over 250 yards, 2 TDs to multiple receivers. Our offensive line led by big blocks by Quay McCollum, Logan Turbyfill, Garrett Livesay, Sam Scott, and Cameron Canfield.

This week we play Union Grove Middle away. Kick-off is set for 7:00pm. Players need to be at Union Grove by 5:45pm with all game equipment. Players will need to be picked up after the game. Uniforms will be collected Friday morning September, 16th in the AMS football dressing room to be cleaned.

Reminder: Alcoa High School plays at home Friday night against Scott County. The Scott County football team will use the AMS locker room during the game. Please make sure that all player football equipment, school equipment, and personal items must be removed from the dressing room no later than 3pm Friday afternoon. Any items left behind could be lost or stolen. AMS players are responsible for all of their equipment and personal items.

Thanks,

Coach McClurg

Weekly News Recap for week of Aug 29- Sept 2

This week we had to get ready for Webb School of Knoxville. They are a Wing-T team that can be difficult to defend if the defense is not disciplined. There were several issues to begin the game. Webb did not tell us ahead of time that they did not plan on running the scoreboard clock which makes managing the game more difficult. After some discussion with the Webb administration we worked it out for Doug LeQuire to take care of the clock and scoreboard duties. I would once again like to thank Doug LeQuire for stepping in to help our team as usual. Doug for years has been a big help to our team and he was again for this game. A big thanks needs to go to Coach Doug by everyone. Thanks again Doug for all you do for us!

After a few adjustments our defense settled down and held Webb to only one scoring drive. Several players made big plays defensively for us. Jonah Dunnings had the hardest hit of the game when a Webb running back tried to cutback while Jonah was pursuing. Jonathan Decker, Ryan Clark, Kahlil Abhunia, Florent Ismali, and Peyton Hill led the defense. Physical hits and gang tackling helped put an end to the Webb running game.

Offensively we were led by our offensive line. Logan Turbyfill, Garrett Livesay, and Sam Scott moved defenders which allowed huge runs by Dustin Clabough, Mason McClanahan, and Matthew McClurg. Caleb Woody kept the Webb defense from crowding the line of scrimmage by beating them deep on a 48 yard touchdown pass from Mitchell McClurg.

This was the first game or scrimmage that we were unable to get the majority of our team in the game in for atleast a few plays. Our success on game day can be attributed to the hard work put in by our scout team offense and defense. This week our scout team offense needs to be thanked for providing a great look for our first team defense. The scout team did a great job executing Webb’s offense and defense. Great job Jake Amburgey, Logan Turbyfill, Sam Scott, Myles Brown, Bryson Motley, Austin Endsley, Jalen Sykes, Malik Salter, Chris Badgett, Iyron Edwards, Caleb Cooper, George Hooker, and Jared McDonald. These guys knocked our first defense around while executing a difficult offense. A huge part of the win goes out to everyone who works hard in practice to help us succeed.

This week we play North Middle School from Lenoir City on Thursday, September 8th. Kick-off is set for 7:00pm. We will wear our maroon uniforms. Players need to be back at school no later than 5:20pm.

Thank you,

Coach McClurg

Weekly News Recap for week of August 22-26

This week began badly. Within the first few minutes of Monday’s practice wide receiver/defensive back Gabe Long broke is arm while catching passes in warm-ups. Just after the injury occured Gabe told Coach Flynn that his arm was dislocated from 40 yards away I could easily see that Gabe was wrong!!! It wasn’t dislocated it looked pretty bad. We contacted Gabe’s family along with Peggy Bratt our AMS/AHS trainer who quickly immobilized Gabe’s arm and helped get information to the hospital on Gabe’s injury. Gabe had surgery that night and we received good news that opening up the arm wasn’t necessary. Gabe’s a tough football player, just over 24 hours later he made it to our game against Carpenters and was the team captain for the game. Please keep Gabe and his family in your prayers. We are also sad to announce that 7th grader Kameron Miller who made a huge hit on a kick-off and recovered a fumble on another kick-off against Sevier County has had to leave the team due to a back injury that was non-football related. Please keep Kameron and his family in your prayers. In another injury 6th grader Logan Hickey broke his hand at practice just over a week ago and will not be able to return this season. Please keep Logan and his family in your prayers.

On Tuesday night we played Carpenters Middle School at Alcoa. We played a great game in almost everyway. Our defense looked very sharp. The first defense never allowed a first down and CMS never scored during the game. Everyone of the 56 players on the roster got to play again for the second game in a row. Caleb Woody did a great job of kick-off again. Dustin Clabough and Khalil Abuhania both made big time hits to stop kick returners in their tracks. The offensive line dominated up front. Garrett Livesay, Sam Scott, Logan Turbyfill, Jonathan Decker, and Quay McCollum along with Cameron Canfield moved defenders out of the way so that our run game could get established early. Caleb Woody caught a Mitchell McClurg pass for 34 yards to put us in position to score. Dustin Clabough broke free for a 24 yard touchdown run to begin the scoring. On our next series Mitchell McClurg broke free for a 15 yard touchdown run behind the blocking of Jonathan Decker and Quay McCollum. Our final score of the night came on a 28 yard touchdown reception by Ryan Clark. Ryan made an amazing catch and off defenders to get in the endzone. Florent Ismali had two sure handed catches for conversions.

Defensively we played the best I’ve seen this year. Safety Payton Hill patrolled the secondary to ensure that no pass would be completed and any runner who broke through would be put on the ground. Jeremiah Scott, Matthew McClurg, Mason McClanahan, and Jonah Dunnings made several stops to prevent Carpenters from moving the ball.

Next week, we play Webb School away on Thursday, September 1st. Players will need go home after school on Thursday and return ready to board the bus with all equipment at 5:00pm. The bus will pull out at 5:30pm. Kick-off is set for 7:00pm.

Thanks,

Coach McClurg
